OpenAI Updates Memory in ChatGPT, To Connect your Past Chats

OpenAI announced to rollout new update for the memory feature for tailoring answers based on old chats.
The company says; “The feature, which appears in ChatGPT’s settings as ‘reference saved memories,’ aims to make conversations with ChatGPT more relevant to users. The update will add conversational context to ChatGPT’s text, voice, and image-generation features.”
The new Memory upgrade in ChatGPT is being implemented globally for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. The feature isn’t released for the European Economic Area (EEA), Iceland, the UK, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Norway for data privacy rules. The company also confirmed the feature will be expanded to Team, Enterprise, and Edu users within the next two weeks. There isn’t any news to deliver the facility for free users such as a spokesperson says;
“We are focused on the rollout to paid tiers for now,”
OpenAI introduced the Memory feature in February 2024 for paid users at the first stage and expanded to all users later. The feature was available with limited functionality to remember specific parts of information related to the preferences and interests of users. Now, the feature is upgraded to all past chat references.
The feature will help ChatGPT to remember information in two ways
- Uses ‘saved memories’ as according to the user’s manual command what to remember
- Uses ‘reference chat history’ which are insights ChatGPT gathers from past chats to improve future ones
OpenAI offers options for users to select the type; referencing past chats, or Memory entirely. For the purpose, users need to navigate to Settings, click on the Personalization option, and select Saved Memories, and if not interested in old chats, simply click the checkbox next to it to disable the feature, and enable the Temporary chat function.
The upgrade in Memory feature is a step to follow the update offered by Google for Gemini AI in February.
